Job Description

Responsibilities and Specific Assignments

General Responsibilities:

  • Provide psychosocial support and psychological first aid to survivors of war trauma, torture, gender-based violence (GBV), and, when necessary, survivors of natural disasters.
  • Conduct screening and assessment for psychological distress.
  • Engage with the community to address issues of war, economic crises, torture, trauma, and GBV through sensitization, dialogue, and mediation.
  • Gain proficiency with PU-AMI data collection tools, conduct screenings, submit assessment data, and provide timely, accurate PSS reports.
  • Collaborate closely with the PSS Supervisor and database staff to ensure high-quality reporting.
  • Enter data collected from the field or MHT level accurately.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all client interactions, observing ethical practices in a culturally sensitive manner, especially regarding gender.
  • Raise community awareness on psychological distress and available psychosocial support mechanisms.
  • Refer clients to specialized services as required, based on area-specific service mapping.
  • Engage in self-care activities, including supervision, debriefings, and shared sessions.
  • Participate in PSS/PFA-related trainings organized by PU-AMI.
  • Provide follow-up for MHPSS cases as needed and develop an action plan for ongoing support of beneficiaries.
  • Ensure proper documentation to maintain quality reporting.
  • Attend weekly MHPSS supervision and on-the-job training sessions.
  • Offer psychosocial support to mothers and caregivers at the MHT level.
  • Prepare individualized progress reports for stakeholder updates.
  • Encourage self-sufficiency and resilience among beneficiaries and their families.
  • Safeguard beneficiaries' safety, confidentiality, and independence.
  • Assist with additional related activities as directed by the expatriate MHPSS Coordinator.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by MHPSS department managers or relevant program managers to enhance project and activity outcomes.

Objective 1: Management of PSS Project Activities

Activities/Main Duties:

  • Provide psychosocial support and psychological first aid to survivors of war trauma, torture, GBV, and natural disasters as needed.
  • Support pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as caregivers of malnourished children, through individual or group psychosocial support, based on activity design.
  • Assist individuals experiencing psychological distress and psychosocial disabilities according to cultural context and SOPs. Provide awareness and psychoeducation per the screening criteria for group or individual PSS sessions.
  • Follow program guidelines on the admission and discharge of beneficiaries from PSS interventions, sharing activity data with the PSS Supervisor and database officer promptly.
  • Engage with community groups and leaders to address issues like war, economic crises, torture, trauma, and GBV, promoting mental well-being, unity, and social cohesion.

Objective 2: Reporting and Documentation

Activities/Main Duties:

  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, or quarterly activity data and reports according to the project’s schedule.
  • Provide ad-hoc base reports on specific issues, including security or challenges impacting work progress.
  • Maintain confidentiality of project data and beneficiary information, securely storing data records in locked cabinets at the work station.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Primary or Higher Health Program certificate/diploma in Nursing, Midwifery, or a related health education field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience providing group and individual PSS support sessions or therapy for individuals and groups with complex trauma histories.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or a certified diploma in Psychosocial Counseling from MoPH is an asset.
  • In-depth familiarity with the local context, language, culture, and stakeholders; candidates from the relevant province are preferred.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in local languages, particularly Pashto and Dari, is highly preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to travel independently to project sites and locations within and across provinces.
  • A strong commitment to humanitarian principles and causes.
