About AWEC

The Afghan Women's Educational Center (AWEC) is a non-political, non-profit, woman-led national organization established in 1991 by a group of educated Afghan women in exile. AWEC was formed to address the lack of facilities for Afghan refugees initially in Islamabad and later in Peshawar, Pakistan. The organization has consistently championed advocacy and raised awareness for the rights of women and children, while providing essential services to those who often fall outside existing support systems. In recent years, AWEC has actively worked to empower women by mobilizing Afghan communities—from local leaders to political figures—towards reducing and eventually ending violence against women.

AWEC's vision is to build “an inclusive and just society with a responsive public and private sector, where all women and children have access to opportunities that enhance their quality of life and enable them to realize their full potential.”

AWEC upholds a zero-tolerance policy regarding violations of its Code of Conduct, which includes strict guidelines on safeguarding, sexual harassment (SH), and fraud. This policy applies to all AWEC staff, consultants, contractors, volunteers, interns, suppliers, vendors, sub-grantees/partners, implementing partners, and any other affiliates.
